This week we are rolling out a new update of Thumb Keyboard. Some of the major improvements in this update:
Continuous Voice Recognition
(for Android 4.x)
We integrated the new Google Voice Typing service to make use of the latest voice recognition technology. With continuous voice recognition the user doesn’t have to wait till the recognition system has processed a whole phrase, but can continue dictating while the system processes the recognized words in real time.
Because of the seamless integration with the keyboard typing becomes almost as easy as talking.
New, improved layouts for 7″ tablets
With the launch of the Nexus 7 we felt we needed to contribute to the next big step for Android. We updated all of our layouts to facilitate comfortable typing on a new generation of light weight 7″ tablets. As always, intuitive use was our starting point when designing these layouts. And you will feel it, typing on a 7″ tablet with Thumb Keyboard is almost as easy as twiddling thumbs.
One-handed operation mode for large-screen phones
We know that you love your new large-screen phone. And you are right! It’s a pleasure to browse, read and navigate on these devices. But you don’t like it to be a two-handed phone all the time, right? Well here’s our latest addition to the innovation we started with Thumb Keyboard: a one-handed (one-thumb) operated keyboard.

We added an easy toggle so you can switch fast between the normal portrait layout and this new one-handed layout. So imagine, with this and the new voice recognition system, typing is almost as easy as lifting your thumb.
Keyboard shortcuts
As always we couldn’t stop. We also added some new useful keyboard shortcuts, that makes it feel as if you were typing on your comfortable PC keyboard (or Mac keyboard, whatever, we don’t care)
The shortcuts we have added:
- Shift – backspace: to delete the word before the cursor
- Shift – cursor left: to navigate to the previous word
- Shift – cursor right: to navigate to the next word
- Shift – cursor up: to go to the beginning of a line
- Shift – cursor down: to go to the end of a line
- Long press return: to delete the word before the cursor (in case you want to have an extra option)
That’s it?
We didn’t anticipate that question after the impressive new features we listed above. But no, of course not. There’s more to come and there’s more right now. All the things we’ve added before of course and not to forget, the other thing we added to this new version: gesture support and the ability to define the actions you want when swiping left, right, up and down on the keyboard.
